Audra McDonald's artistry is unmatched in the range and variety of her work as a vocalist, as well as an actor. As the winner of an unprecedented six Tony Awards (two Grammy Awards) and one Emmy Award, McDonald was named to Time magazine's list for 100 influential people in 2015. She also received President Obama's National Medal of Arts for her accomplishments. Born into a musical family McDonald lived in Fresno California and received her singing training in the classical style at the New York's Juilliard School. The year 1994 was the year following her graduation from Juilliard School, McDonald was awarded the Tony Award for "Best Performance of a Leading Actress the Musical" for Carousel. In the following four years, acting in Broadway's most acclaimed productions, Master Class by Terrence M. McNally (1996) and Ragtime (1998) in 1998, she earned two additional Tony Awards. She won the fourth Tony for the role she played alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun. When she was in 2012, she was the lead actress for the role of Porgy and Bess in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess she earned her fifth Tony and won the first prize in the lead actor category. She created Broadway history when she became the most popular Tony Award nominee. The role she played as Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill in the show, which was also the catalyst for the career of her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, earned her six Tony Awards. As the first actress to be awarded in four different acting categories, McDonald broke the record for the amount of awards an actor has been awarded. McDonald has also been featured for theatre shows such as The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV 2004 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nigh (2009) Twelfth Nigh (2009); it also was the Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut shuffle Along Or the Making of the Musical Sense of 1921, and all That Followed (16) Frankie and Johnny in Clair de Lune (192019) as well as Ohio State Murders (2023) McDonald first appeared on television as a drama actor in The Peabody Award winner CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years. In 1999, she appeared alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber on the ABC/Disney television version of Annie. And in 2000, she played a recurring on NBC's popular series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. Following her debut Emmy nomination for her performance in the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit produced by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned on television network in 2003 on the political drama Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and starring Josh Brolin. In 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year she was an actor in NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald was awarded the fourth Emmy nomination for her part in the HBO film special Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in 2016. The Bite will be a six-episode drama about a epidemic co-produced by Spectrum Originals, CBS Studios and Taylor Schilling in 2021. Having first appeared in the role of U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's legal show The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald took on her role (now named Liz Reddick) as a season-long regular on The Good Fight on Paramount+ getting three Critics Choice Award nominations for her role. Presently, she is appearing as a guest on Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which airs on HBO.
