Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young toddler. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that the school was not for her. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was accepted. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was not able to graduate until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. But Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances and added stand-up comedy to her resume in the year 1996.
